Summary:
The Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth (VFHY) empowers Virginia’s youth to make healthy choices by reducing and preventing youth tobacco and nicotine use, substance use, and childhood obesity. VFHY is seeking a full-time Deputy Director to work collaboratively with the Executive Director and Board of Trustees to develop strategic direction. This position will manage staff and provide oversight for a variety of operational functions of the organization. The position will also have authority to direct operations in the absence of the Executive Director.
Major Responsibilities:
The Deputy Director has a primary role in coordinating the execution of key programs and initiatives including managing staff, developing and managing the agency’s budget, reviewing and updating agency policies and procedures, interfacing with legal counsel for guidance, completing and/or reviewing reports, and building relationships with a variety of state and national organizations. This position is also cross-trained on human resource and financial management functions.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have an educational background or experience in public administration, organizational management, or a related field. A bachelor’s degree is required and a master’s degree is preferred. Comprehensive executive or senior management level experience with some knowledge of government processes preferred. Experience in leading and managing professional staff. Extensive knowledge of organizational operations is essential with the ability to oversee and positively impact internal operations. Proficient in budget development and management. Experience with procurement processes and contract management. Knowledge of human resource policies, practices, and procedures.
The selected candidate will possess the ability to think strategically, ensure key initiatives meet desired objectives, and lead and direct the performance of employees. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential with the ability to build relationships with diverse audiences including VFHY’s board and staff, a variety of state and national organizations, the Governor’s administration, policy makers, and the general public. Skilled in analysis and recommending solutions and ability to make quality decisions using sound judgement. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe software. Familiarity with the Commonwealth’s Cardinal finance and human resources systems a plus.
