Effective Program Strategies for Successful Youth Programs

Workshop Description

This workshop is recommended for program managers, supervisors, and staff members who work directly in youth programs that must demonstrate effective outcomes. Whether developing and implementing new youth programs or sustaining existing youth programs, effective program strategies are critical to being successful in reaching desired program outcomes. This workshop focuses on core essentials such as: adolescent development, assessment and evaluation, prevention research and best practices for 15 successful youth programming. Participants engage in interactive activities designed to highlight each of the core essentials and to understand the effectiveness of the program strategies.

In this workshop you will:

  • identify core essentials and effective program strategies for successful youth programs.
  • identify and implement youth assessment tools.
  • identify potential areas of modification in their own programs.
  • utilize a logic model approach in measuring program effectiveness.

Workshop Instructor

Steve Hixon
Program Consultant

Hixon also works as a Youth Program Consultant throughout the state and nationally. He has developed and implemented 3 nationally recognized prevention programs. He has an undergraduate degree in Social Work and a master’s degree in business administration.

He has over 25 years of experience working with youth and families in rural, urban and suburban areas. He has been an adjunct faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University, served on United Way’s Family, Youth and Children Action Council and Virginia Union University’s Social Work Advisory Board both for 20 years. He is a national Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Instructor, a national Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Trainer (SAPST), and is a state certified Cultural Competency Trainer. He is very committed to working with youth and families and those who impact their lives.
