Cultural Competency: The Self-Awareness Spectrum

Workshop Description
Everyone has biases and sees stereotypes. This engaging workshop focuses on the origins of our cultural biases & stereotypes.
The concept of implicit bias and its impact will be explored and participants will engage in activities that provide relevant insight and introspection of self-awareness as a critical component to becoming culturally competent.

Program Consultant – Cultural Competency Trainer
Hixon also works as a Youth Program Consultant throughout the state and nationally. He has developed and implemented 3 nationally recognized prevention programs. He has an undergraduate degree in Social Work and a master’s degree in business administration.
He has over 25 years of experience working with youth and families in rural, urban and suburban areas. He has been an adjunct faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University, served on United Way’s Family, Youth and Children Action Council and Virginia Union University’s Social Work Advisory Board both for 20 years. He is a national Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Instructor, a national Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Trainer (SAPST), and is a state certified Cultural Competency Trainer. He is very committed to working with youth and families and those who impact their lives.
