Cultural Competency: Our Perception is Our Reality

Workshop Description
In today’s multi-cultural society, individuals and organizations must be able to recognize elements of culture and how they may impact the individuals and/or groups they serve.
This interactive workshop provides an assessment of participants’ understanding of what cultural competency is and is not. Core components of cultural competency are identified. Diversity is explored in the broader context and in the identification of various cultural groups. The workshop will provide answers to the question of why cultural competency.

Program Consultant – Cultural Competency Trainer
Hixon also works as a Youth Program Consultant throughout the state and nationally. He has developed and implemented 3 nationally recognized prevention programs. He has an undergraduate degree in Social Work and a master’s degree in business administration.
He has over 25 years of experience working with youth and families in rural, urban and suburban areas. He has been an adjunct faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University, served on United Way’s Family, Youth and Children Action Council and Virginia Union University’s Social Work Advisory Board both for 20 years. He is a national Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Instructor, a national Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Trainer (SAPST), and is a state certified Cultural Competency Trainer. He is very committed to working with youth and families and those who impact their lives.
