Approximately 50,000 Virginians across the state will explore fun facts on the physical activity needed to burn off the calories from sugary drinks firsthand at one of 245 Rev Your Bev Day events taking place on Wednesday, May 14, in schools and communities statewide. Rev Your Bev Day is the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth’s initiative to increase awareness about the health impacts of sugar-sweetened beverages. The flagship event will be held at Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary School in Richmond at 3:45 p.m. on May 14 and will be co-hosted by the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, the YMCA of Greater Richmond and Greater Richmond Fit4Kids.
Schools, organizations and businesses participating in Rev Your Bev Day will also assist a statewide data collection effort being conducted by Y Street, the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth’s statewide volunteer group for high school students.
“Data collected last year from Rev Your Bev Day 2013 revealed that one in three respondents, both youth and adults, drink at least one sugar-sweetened beverage each day,” says Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth Obesity Prevention Coordinator Heidi Hertz. “This underscores the need for continued nutrition education on choosing healthy beverages.”
For every additional sugar-sweetened beverage consumed per day, a child’s risk of becoming overweight increases by 60 percent[iii] – and it isn’t as simple as just walking it off. Rev Your Bev Day 2014 will focus on educating Virginians about the amount of physical activity needed to burn off the calories in popular sugar-sweetened beverages.
This year Y Street members are launching a Rev Your Bev Day Speakers’ Bureau comprised of nine Y Street youth members. These Y Street volunteers will be speaking at select Rev Your Bev Day events, serving as consultants to event organizers and educating other young people about making healthy beverage choices. Y Street youth members will be present at the following Rev You Bev Day events:
· The C. Waldo Scott Center for H.O.P.E., 3100 Wickham Ave., Newport News, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
· Benjamin Franklin Middle School, 225 Middle School Rd., Rocky Mount, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
· Elizabeth Davis Middle School, 601 Corvus Ct., Chester, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
· The Mosaic District, 2910 District Ave., Fairfax, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
· Kecoughtan High School, 522 Woodland Rd., Hampton, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
· Greenbrier Family YMCA, 1033 Greenbrier Pkwy., Chesapeake, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
· Victory Family YMCA, 101 Long Green Blvd., Yorktown, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Y Street volunteer Sam Robbins, a senior at Manchester High School in Midlothian, is a member of the Rev Your Bev Day Speakers’ Bureau and will be attending the Rev Your Bev Day flagship event in Richmond. “I wanted to join the speakers’ bureau so I could help be a voice of change. Being an athlete, I thought I needed sports drinks to give me an edge – but I learned from the Rev Your Bev initiative that those drinks have a lot of sugar. That inspired me to want to help educate more people about the hidden sugars in everyday drinks.”
